Democratic principle should guarantee indyref2, says Harvie

With the SNP falling one seat short of a majority, the Greens' eight seats could prove crucial in the fight for independence.

Co-leader of the Scottish Greens Patrick Harvie has said unionist parties should respect voters returning a pro-independence majority.

A constitutional tug of war over the mandate for second referendum looks likely with pro-independence and unionist parties.

With the SNP falling one seat short of an overall majority, the Greens’ eight seats could prove crucial an any referendum bill being passed through Holyrood.

Speaking on an STV News Election Special, Harvie said: “If there was a pro-union majority, opposed to independence, I would of course have to accept, reluctantly, the legitimacy of saying there shouldn’t be a referendum.’

“All that’s required is that they accept the same basic democratic principle that the people of Scotland have made the decision about their parliament, their parliament will make a decision on a referendum and then they will make a decision on their future.”
