Scotland has recorded 208 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

It is the highest daily figure since May 8’s 225.

It also marks the eighth day in a row new infections have been more than 100, taking total positive Covid-19 cases in Scotland since the start of the pandemic to 21,397.

The increase, up from Saturday’s figure of 141, takes the weekly total of confirmed infections to 1079 – the most over a seven-day period since May 6.

No further deaths have been reported.

The official death toll in Scotland stands at 2496, however weekly figures on suspected Covid-19 deaths suggest the most up-to-date total is now 4228.

There are 245 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected coronavirus, a decrease of six since Saturday. Of these patients, four are in intensive care.

The 208 new cases amount to 2.3% of all newly-tested individuals.

Commenting on the rising numbers of confirmed cases, Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “Today’s numbers show a continued increase, including in percentage positive.

“While this reflects the substantial opening up of the economy, it reminds us of the need to deploy strong counter measures.

“We have two main tools at our disposal.

“One of these tools is Test and Protect – it is working well and so far reaching well over 90% of positive cases and close contacts.

“Within [the] next few days we will launch a major enhancement – the Protect Scotland app – which will allow us to reach a wider range of contacts.

“Our other main tool – indeed our first line of defence – is ourselves. As we are all out and about more, we must take greater care on face coverings, hygiene, distance.”

The First Minister highlighted that the rise in cases is not matched by a rise in hospital/ICU admissions and deaths.

She added: “That’s good news but we mustn’t be complacent about it. It could be a time lag – some countries, e.g. France, that have had cases rising for longer are seeing these indicators rise now too.

“All in all, this is a moment to take note and act in a way that prevents spread.

“Even if you think risk of Covid to yourself is low, don’t risk infecting others more vulnerable.

“Complying with FACTS protects you, your family/community and the NHS. It will also save lives.”

Of Sunday’s new cases, 92 are in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region – where restrictions on indoor gatherings have been put in place across three council areas due to a spike in cases.

The health board’s Test and Protect team is currently carrying out Covid-19 contact tracing in four new schools after positive cases were confirmed on Saturday.

NHS Lanarkshire has reported 30 new cases and has already warned the region could face similar restrictions on gatherings.

Elsewhere, NHS Lothian has recorded 18 new cases while both NHS Forth Valley and NHS Grampian have each reported 14. NHS Ayrshire and Arran has 11, NHS Tayside and NHS Fife each have eight, NHS Highland has six, NHS Borders has four, and NHS Dumfries and Galloway has three new cases.

No new cases were discovered in Shetland, Orkney or the Western Isles.
