'Whole rotten lot need to go' - Calls for resignations from PM's cabinet

Calls for further resignations from Boris Johnson’s Government after Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid quit No10 Downing St

In the wake of the resignations of both the UK’s chancellor and health secretary, there are calls for the remaining ministers in Boris Johnson’s cabinet to quit.

Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid dramatically resigned in stinging letters after the Prime Minister admitted he knew about complaints over sexual misconduct relating to former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher dating back to 2019.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said “the whole rotten lot” in Boris Johnson’s Westminster Government should go.

She said: “Feels like end might be nigh for Johnson – not a moment too soon.

“Notable tho that the resigning ministers were only prepared to go when they were lied to – they defended him lying to public.

“The whole rotten lot need to go. And needs the permanent alternative of independence.”

However, the Scottish Secretary has said he backs Johnson remaining in Downing Street.

MP Alister Jack said: “I fully support the Prime Minister. I am sorry to see good colleagues resign, but we have a big job of work to do, and that’s what we’re getting on with.”

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said MPs quitting the Cabinet are “rats deserting a sinking ship”.

Speaking after the resignation of Sunak and Javid, Sarwar said: “This is rats deserting a sinking ship.

“We all know that Boris Johnson is a morally bankrupt and corrupt Prime Minister, and he’s leading a corrupt out-of-touch Tory government.

“That’s why the sooner we have a general election, the better. And in that election only Labour can replace the Tories – the rest can just oppose them.”

The SNP’s Westminster leader said the resignation of two Cabinet ministers represented the “end for Boris Johnson”.

Ian Blackford said: “This is the end for Boris Johnson. Tory MPs should have got rid of him months ago – and it speaks volumes they are only acting now out of self-interest and fear they will lose their seats at the next election.”

The MP for Ross, Skye and Lochaber, added: “Westminster is in constant crisis. Whoever replaces Boris Johnson, Scotland will still be stuck with a Tory government we didn’t vote for imposing Brexit, austerity cuts and damaging policies we don’t support.

“The only way to protect Scotland’s interests is to become an independent country and escape Westminster control for good.”
