Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds announce birth of baby boy

Boris Johnson and his fiancee Carrie Symonds have announced the birth of a baby boy.

The spokeswoman for Johnson said: “The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds are thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning. Both mother and baby are doing very well.

“The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team.”

At the end of February, the Prime Minister and Ms Symonds they were expecting a baby in early summer and also that they had got engaged.

The news of the birth comes just weeks after the PM was discharged from intensive care where he had been battling coronavirus, while Ms Symonds also suffered symptoms of the disease.

Although he has now returned to work, Johnson will not appear at Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted her congratulations, saying: “Some good news – sending congratulations to Carrie and the PM. And wishing health and happiness to the wee one.”

Johnson, 55, and Ms Symonds, 31, made history as the first unmarried couple to officially live together in Downing Street when they moved in last year.

Ms Symonds, a conservationist and former Conservative party communications chief, made headlines when she was romantically linked to Johnson earlier in 2019.

But her association with him dates back to when she worked on his successful London mayoral re-election bid in 2012.

The PM’s marriage to Ms Symonds will be his third.
