The widow of an award-winning bakery owner has said she is “overwhelmed” after £20,000 was raised for her family following his unexpected death.
Steven Buchan, who launched Vegan Bay Baker from his home in 2019 alongside partner Zoe, died this week at the age of 33.
The business went on to open a factory in Ellon and three branches in Aberdeen, Peterhead, and Balmedie.
In an emotional post on social media, Zoe Buchan announced that the business had ceased trading following Steven’s death.
Zoe launched a JustGiving campaign on behalf of her family, including three children Lilly, Phoebe, and Paddy, in order to give Steven the “funeral he deserves”.
An outpouring of support for the family has seen over £20,000 donated.
The fundraiser read: “I lost my beautiful husband Steve suddenly and unexpectedly this week. As most of you will know, he was the Vegan Bay Baker. He leaves behind myself and our three beautiful children.
“I am hoping to raise enough money to give him the funeral he deserves and to have for our children.
“I am so overwhelmed by all the offers of support and help and all the lovely messages I’ve received. I really appreciate everyone who has been so kind and shared stories of him and how wonderful he was. He was the best daddy to our kids and husband to me.
“We already miss him so much.”
Vegan Bay Baker was launched when Zoe went vegan in 2019 after being “shocked” at the poor selection of vegetarian choices.
The bakery went on to win the gold award for best sourdough bread in the Highlands, Islands, and Grampian.
Tributes flooded in online from friends, customers, and fellow businesses following the announcement of Steven’s death.
