The festive season has officially arrived across Scotland, with markets bringing thousands of visitors and Christmas cheer.

As the countdown to Christmas begins, European stalls and sparkling lights will set up shop across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and more.

The markets have become a huge part of the Christmas season, giving people a chance to enjoy the festive cheer amid the chaos of preparations for the big day.

Edinburgh Christmas Market

The most popular market in Scotland is Edinburgh’s Christmas, which has gained worldwide recognition.

Thousands of tourists travel from around the world to see Scotland’s capital city lit up with lights and its streets lined with delicious treats and gifts.

Named as the “most stunning” market in the UK, the annual event returns to East Princes Street Gardens on November 15.

Among the attractions are the LNER Big Wheel, the Polar Ice Bar and the George Street Ice Rink.

Aberdeen Christmas Market

Thousands of people descend on the city centre every year to make the most of the festive ice rink, fairground rides and market stalls at Marischal Square.

The market is scheduled to sparkle all the way until December 31.

In addition to over 45 stalls and rides, festivities will continue throughout the month, including the Christmas Lights Parade, Santa Run, the Nativity Scene at Union Terrace Gardens, and Carol Concerts in the Winter Gardens.

Three of the most iconic buildings on Union Street will also become glittering beacons of Christmas cheer with animated illuminations projected on them.

The graphics will be projected onto the Capitol, Trinity Hall, and the former RBS building at St Nicholas Square, which will be unveiled during the Christmas Parade, taking place on November 16.

Glasgow Christmas Market

Glasgow’s Winter Wonderland is one of the first in the country to kick off.

Beginning on November 6 and running until January 4, the festivities can be found on Glasgow Green and St Enoch Square.

During the market, kids can meet Santa in his festive Grotto and families can enjoy live theatre performances in the Festive Big Top Live!.

Independent food vendors are scattered all over the city alongside unique gifts and crafts from local sellers.

The market also features rides, including an observation wheel.

Oban Winter Festival

The Oban Winter Festival begins on November 14 and will run until December 21.

The month-long event features a craft market and an array of community events.

Dundee’s Christmas in the Square, run by Hornes Pleasure Fairs, will begin on December 4 and run until December 31.

The event will feature rides, market stalls, live music and an alpine bar.

The market will be open from 12-8pm on weekends and open until 9pm on weekends.
