A warning has been issued after a buyer was scammed out of cash in a puppy “deposit scam” in Aberdeenshire.
Police Scotland is warning people looking to add a fury friend to their family to be wary of online “deposit scams”.
It comes after a resident in Aberdeenshire was trying to buy a Dachshund and ended up being defrauded of £100 deposit.
The victim saw Dachshund puppies for sale on a popular pet for sale website and after contacting the seller agreed to pay a deposit to secure a puppy.
Arrangements were made for a video call but the seller cancelled contact after the deposit was received and has since stopped all contact.
Officers said scammers might also ask for further funds to cover “unforeseen costs” such as pet insurance or vaccinations after they’ve made the initial payment.
Police Scotland said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
North East Crime Reduction officer PC Russell urged people to be mindful for paying upfront for kittens or puppies they’ve never met.
“Scammers will often send photos or videos, persuading potential pet owners to make a deposit or full payment in advance.”
They added: “Scammers may offer incentives like ‘free insurance’ or ‘puppy packs’, but this does not mean they are legitimate dealers. Do as much research as you can on the breeder and the advert. Do not send money without seeing the puppy or kitten. You should see the puppy in its own environment interacting with its mother.
“A lot of advice on getting a puppy or kitten can be found online from national organisations and charities.’
