Two pensioners have been taken to hospital following a crash in Aberdeenshire that forced the closure of a road for more than nine hours.

The men, aged 74 and 65, sustained serious injuries in the collision between a grey Audi A3 car and a grey Ford Transit on the B966 between Fordoun and Auchenblae just after 4pm on Wednesday, March 8.

They are being treated at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

A 50-year-old-man, who was driving the van, was treated at the scene for minor injuries while officers shut off the route to conduct initial investigations.

Police praised the work of passing motorists who stopped to assist those affected by the crash before emergency crews arrived at the scene.

An appeal has been launched for further information.

Sergeant Sarah Ritchie, from the North East Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the three men involved in this incident and their families.

“I would like to thank the people who offered their assistance at the scene and who have already spoken with police.

“We urge anyone else who witnessed the crash, believes they saw the vehicles involved, or may have dashcam footage from the area, to contact us.

“Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 2330 of March 8.”
