Twelve arrested for drink and drug driving as police issue Christmas warning

Police Scotland has reiterated the importance of road safety over the festive period after twelve drivers were arrested for drink and drug driving offences across the North East over the weekend.

The arrests were made between 9pm on Friday, 12 December and 4pm on Sunday, 14 December 2025.

During that period, eight drivers were arrested and charged in connection with drink driving, while four drivers were arrested on suspicion of drug driving, with enquiries ongoing.

Inspector Steve Manson of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said the number of detections over a short timeframe was concerning.

“The fact that twelve people were detected over a two-day period shows that the message is still not getting through to a minority of people who continue to put themselves and others at risk,” he said.

Inspector Manson noted that seven of the eight drink-driving arrests occurred between 11pm and 4am, highlighting the risks associated with late-night driving.

As the festive period approaches, police are urging motorists to plan ahead and make safe decisions.

“We are encouraging people to think before they even start driving. Please plan how you intend to get home and make sure you don’t drive the following day until you are completely sure the alcohol is out of your system,” Inspector Manson added.

Police Scotland confirmed that road checks will continue, with both high-visibility and unmarked patrols being carried out as part of the Festive Drink and Drug Drive Campaign.
