Tributes have been paid to Scottish football journalist Patrick Barclay who has died at the age of 77.

The journalist and sportswriter’s death was confirmed by his family via a statement from the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) on Friday.

Barclay, who grew up in Dundee, was a former chief football commentator for The Times and previously worked for The Sunday Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent and The Observer.

He also wrote a biography of legendary Scottish football manager Sir Alex Ferguson entitled “Football – Bloody Hell!”.

Barclay won the Sports Journalists’ Association (SJA) Sports Writer of the Year award and was previously chairman of the FWA.

His family said: “It is with the greatest sadness that we must announce the death of our dear Patrick Barclay.

“A celebration of Patrick’s life will be held at a later date.

“Meanwhile, we hope that the family’s wish for privacy is respected.”

Manchester United were among the teams to pay tribute on social media, saying: “Paddy will always be held in great esteem by everyone at Manchester United and we send our sympathies to his loved ones at this time.”

Fulham FC added: “We’re so sorry to hear this sad news about Paddy. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family and all who knew him.”

Former Celtic forward Chris Sutton said: “Really sad news this. Rest in peace Patrick.”

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer posted: “Ah no. Such sad news. RIP Paddy,” while former Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler wrote: “A great man… RIP Patrick.”
