Tributes have been paid to a “cherished” oil rig worker from Scotland who died after contracting an infection in Australia.
Colin Kennedy died on Sunday, March 22, after becoming unwell with sepsis after contracting an airborne bacterial virus while working on a rig.
The 43-year-old was placed in isolation, but his condition deteriorated, and he was taken to Broome Hospital in the Kimberley region of Western Australia on Friday, March 20.
His mum and dad flew over from Arbroath to be with him in hospital after the Royal Flying Doctor Service transported him to Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth for urgent care.
SuppliedMore than £3,400 has been raised on a GoFundMe page to support the charity.
His sister told STV News that the family had been “amazed” by the love and support from football legends and players for Colin, who was described a massive Celtic fan.
Travelling Hoops supporters unveiled a banner during a game against Dundee United at Tannadice last month that read: “Get well soon Colin, keep fighting, you’ll never walk alone”.
An online tribute page read: “Colin was living his best life in Australia, a place he proudly called home. A true adventurer at heart, he embraced the world with open arms, leaving his mark in Scotland, Ghana, Thailand, and finally Australia, where he found his forever home and a deep sense of belonging.
“Keeno was a brother, nephew, brother-in-law, uncle, grandson, friend and a son. He was a force of warmth, laughter, and connection.
“He had a way of bringing people together wherever he went, building lifelong friendships across continents. His spirit was infectious, his kindness genuine, and his love for life unmistakable.
“As our big brother and cherished son, he meant everything to us. Though his time with us feels far too short, the memories he created and the lives he touched will live on forever.
“We have been overwhelmed by the love and support shared from near and far. It is a true reflection of just how deeply Colin was loved by so many.”
Arbroath Youth Football Club said on Facebook: “Keeno played his youth football with Arbroath Lads Club, where he made many lifelong friends and was a well-known face around the local football community.
“He absolutely loved his football, and that passion remained a constant throughout his life.
“His loss will be felt deeply across the football community and beyond. Our thoughts are with Keeno’s family, friends, and all who knew him at this incredibly difficult time.”
Montrose Roselea Junior Football Club also announced a minute’s applause in his memory for this weekend’s game at Links Park against Forfar United.
