A teenager has been arrested after a child was “struck by a flare” during a football match at McDiarmid Park in Perth.

Emergency services were called to St Johnstone’s clash with Dundee on Saturday after a 12-year-old boy was allegedly struck by the pyrotechnic thrown from a section of the ground.

He was treated for a facial injury by paramedics at the scene.

A 15-year-old male was arrested in connection with the alleged incident.

A further four teenagers – aged 13, 15 and two 17-year-olds, were also arrested in connection with using pyrotechnics at the game.

St Johnstone Football Club said it was “extremely saddened and concerned” by the incident.

They added: “St Johnstone Football Club is aware of an incident involving a young Dundee fan and a pyrotechnic device that occurred in the away section of McDiarmid Park during yesterday’s Scottish Premiership fixture.

“The club is extremely saddened and concerned to learn of the events and wishes the young supporter a speedy recovery.

“We are working with Dundee FC and the authorities to identify those involved in the away section.

“Supporters are reminded the use of pyrotechnics is illegal within Scottish football grounds.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “During the match at McDiarmid Park on Saturday, 30 March 2024, a 12-year-old boy was allegedly struck by a flare thrown from a section of the ground.

“He was treated for a facial injury by paramedics at the scene.

“A 15-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the alleged incident.

“Following other pyrotechnics being used at the game, a further four people, aged 13, 15, 17 and 17, were also arrested.

“All above are the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.”
