St Johnstone are “deeply saddened” over the death of an elderly fan at McDiarmid Park ahead of their Premiership game against Aberdeen.

The 72-year-old was tended to by medical personnel from both clubs and emergency responders for around an hour following a “medical incident” on Saturday.

Kick-off was delayed by while paramedics provided treatment, however the man died a short time later.

The Perth club issued an update on Tuesday to pass on their sympathy to the man’s family.

Ian Flaherty, Head of Operations, said: “On behalf of the club we would like pass on our deepest sympathy and regrets to all the family affected by the tragic passing at the game on Saturday.

“A heartfelt message goes out to all family and friends concerned at this very difficult time.

“No one should ever go to a football game and not return home.”

The club say they will respect the family’s request for privacy at this time as they thanked all medical and police personnel involved in the incident for their response to the situation as it unfolded.
