The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has launched an investigation following a reported oil slick in the River Don.

A picture taken of the Donmouth in Aberdeen appears to show a large oil spill in the water on Thursday.

Residents on social media have also reported a strong smell coming from the water.

SEPA has confirmed they are aware of the incident and investigators are trying to identify the source of the substance.

A spokesperson for SEPA said: “Having received reports of oil in the River Don this morning, SEPA are working with partner agencies to identify potential sources and investigations are ongoing.

“We would like to thank those who reported the incident to SEPA and encourage anyone who witnesses a pollution incident to contact us immediately on 0800 80 70 60 or by submitting an online report with as much information as possible.”
