Scottish minister Jenny Gilrtuh seeks ‘urgent meeting’ with Fife factory bosses as 100 jobs at risk

A Scottish minister has written to the bosses of a factory in Fife after it was announced that 100 people are at risk of losing their jobs.

Silberline announced earlier this week that it plans to close the site at Leven after a “lengthy review of operations”.

The factory produces industrial pigments and coatings often used in cars.

It has been run by its American owners since 1974 but in January the firm was acquired by German business Eckart.

Silberilne said no final decision had been made but a consultation with employers about closing the plant had begun.

‘Skilled jobs are vital to the community’

On Friday, education and skills minister Jenny Gilruth – who is also the MSP for Mid Fife and Glenrothes – urged the company to change course.

She told STV News: “Silberline has operated in Leven for 50 years since opening back in 1974.

“The site has been a vital source of local employment and innovation ever since for generations of workers and their families.”

Gilruth said the news would come as a “bitter blow” to families in the area.

The minister added: “I am seeking an urgent meeting with Silberline management to urge Eckart to reconsider this decision and to explore alternative options for its 100 employees.

“I have also written to the economy secretary, Mairi McAllan, urging the Scottish Government to engage directly with Eckart in a bid to save these vital local jobs, as these losses have not been completely confirmed.

“These skilled jobs are absolutely vital to my constituency and I will do all that I can to support the workers affected.”

Silberline has been approached for comment.
