An Aberdeen school has been forced to close after a positive case of coronavirus was detected.

Oldmachar Academy took the decision on Thursday night after consulting with NHS Grampian.

In a letter to parents and carers, headteacher Judith Mohamed said there was no evidence of transmission at the Bridge of Don school.

However, it has been closed to undergo a deep clean as a precautionary measure.

It is anticipated that the school will reopen on Monday.

Ms Mohamed said: “I realise that this news will be unsettling.

“However, the decision to close is purely precautionary and we will continue to do all we can to support the health and wellbeing of our school community.”

The NHS’s Test and Protect contact tracers will be getting in touch with individual families on Thursday and throughout Friday.

Posting on Facebook, Oldmachar Academy Parent Council stated: “We appreciate we will all be disappointed and anxious following the news tonight that the school is closed tomorrow.

“Information was sent to all parents in an email earlier this evening.

“We can be reassured that quick action has been taken by the school and NHS Grampian and further advice will be given to individuals as required by the Test and Protect team.

“I’m sure we all have lots of questions but there is no more information to share at present. Take care everyone.”
