Police are urging residents at a block of flats in Dundee to remain indoors after the roof became “insecure” following damage caused by Storm Eowyn.

An emergency services presence remains in place at Gourlay Yard after concerns were raised on Friday about damage to the roof of some flats.

Members of the public are urged to avoid the area and residents currently within the flats are being advised to stay indoors.

If residents leave, they will not be permitted to return.

Those who are still to return to the building are being asked to attend the Apex Hotel on Victoria Dock Road where staff from Dundee City Council will provide further guidance.

Scotland has been battered by life-threatening hurricane-force winds, with two people in hospital and more than 120,000 homes without power on Friday.

Dangerous gusts of 100mph wreaked havoc across the country, felling trees, tearing roofs from buildings and sending debris hurtling through the air.

The storm brought the most intense weather in recent history, with record-breaking wind speeds in places.

A Police Scotland statement read: “Officers remain in the area of Gourlay Yard, Dundee, following concerns raised about an insecure roof at a block of flats earlier on Friday.

“The area remains closed to the public as a precaution, and residents currently within the flats are advised to remain indoors.

“Please note that if you leave the building, you will not be permitted to return at this time.

“Residents returning to the area should attend the Apex Hotel on Victoria Dock Road, where staff from Dundee City Council will provide further guidance and support.

“Officers remain on scene and are available to assist and direct residents as required.

“We appreciate the ongoing patience and cooperation of the community as efforts continue to ensure safety.”
