A man who died after a trawler capsized off Norway after leaving Scotland has been named locally.

Ronald Mackinnon from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, was taken to hospital in Bergen alongside two other crew members but later died following the incident on Sunday.

The UK-registered Njord trawler got into difficulty in the North Sea around 100 nautical miles west of Stavanger at about 1.39pm.

Three people were rescued by helicopter and five others picked up by another vessel.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch confirmed they were looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Foreign Office says it’s working with Norwegian authorities and is supporting the family of the crew member who died, as well as the family of the other crew member who remains in hospital.
