A violent sex offender who targeted teenage girls during a series of crimes has been jailed for nine years.

Kyle Buchan began committing the offences when he was aged 15 and continued his crime spree against females until he was 20.

Buchan, now 22, denied a series of charges during an earlier trial but was convicted of five offences involving violence, sexual violence, including rape, and abusive behaviour.

A judge told him at the High Court in Edinburgh that his attitudes towards young women and sexual entitlement were “very worrying”.

Judge Norman McFadyen KC said: “Your victims in this case varied in age from 14 to 18.”

The judge said that the accounts given by victims of the crimes they suffered at the hands of Buchan were “harrowing and highly troubling”.

He told Buchan: “You had a troubled upbringing and are still young.”

The judge said these were factors he had to take into account in sentencing him, but added: “Plainly only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”

He ordered that Buchan should be under close supervision in the community for a further three years when he will be on licence.

The judge told him: “If you breach any of the conditions, you can be returned to custody.”

The court heard that Buchan carried out a sex attack on a girl he knew in passing at Fairfield Park, in Dundee, in 2021. He grabbed the victim, who was 14 or 15 at the time, and assaulted her.

Another underage girl was subjected to prolonged abuse from 2019 by Buchan at locations in Dundee, during which he isolated her from her mother and friends.

He made derogatory, abusive, sexual and threatening remarks to her and monitored her movements. She was sent abusive text messages by Buchan who demanded to know who she was with.

Buchan subjected her to attempted rape and rape during a series of assaults, which began when she was aged 14, at locations in Tayside, including bushes on Law Hill, Dundee. During the sexual offending he exposed himself and demanded that she carry out sexual acts with him.

He carried out a sex attack on a 17-year-old girl at a flat in Dundee in March 2024 when she was asleep and incapable of consenting. During the assault, he put a hand inside her clothing and molested her after she awoke, but pretended to be sleeping. He also detained the girl in the flat and dragged her towards a bed during the attack.

Buchan also subjected another teen to abusive behaviour between June and December in 2024 at locations in Dundee when he demanded she remove males from her social media account.

He prevented her using her mobile phone, isolated her from family and friends and stopped her visiting her mother.

During the abuse he pulled her from a sofa and dragged her along the floor, repeatedly punched her and followed her. On one occasion he told her to speak with a lawyer and attempt to retract a statement she gave to police in August 2024.

Buchan committed the abuse against the victim after being freed on bail eight times at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Defence solicitor advocate James Keegan KC, for Buchan, said he has had “a terrible life” and added: “Frankly, he has had no guidance in life at all. He has gone from one establishment to another.”

Buchan was placed on the sex offenders’ register for an indeterminate period and the court made non harassment orders prohibiting him contacting or attempting to contact the victims.
