An investigation has been launched after a fire was deliberately set at a Sheriff Court in Fife in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on the town’s Whytescauseway at around 4.50am following reports of a door on fire.

The blaze appears to have been extinguished, however, a police cordon is still in place.

Detectives are treating the incident as wilful and an investigation is still ongoing.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.50am on Thursday, February 6, 2025, police were made aware of a door on fire at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, Whytescauseway, Kirkcaldy.

“The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.48am on Thursday, February 6 to reports of a building on fire at Town Square, Kirkcaldy.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and one height vehicle and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a doorway of a three-storey building.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The main building is to remain closed on Friday following the blaze. However, criminal trials will call in the Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court Annex building, whilst civil business will be carried out virtually.

The main building will reopen on Monday.

A spokesperson from the Scottish Courts and Tribunal Service said: “Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court’s main building at Whytecauseway Kirkcaldy, will remain closed on Friday February 7 2025.

“All criminal business including trials will call in the Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court Annex building, Brycedale Avenue, Kirkcaldy. Accused and witnesses should attend as normal at that building.

“Civil business will proceed virtually.

“Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court main building will reopen on Monday 10 February 2025.”
