An investigation has been launched into claims that multiple brothels are operating within Arbroath.

The issue was first made public by two Angus councillors, Jack Cruickshanks and Derek Wann, after they were approached by concerned residents.

STV News understands that claims have been made that individuals enter a business in the town and ask for a specific service, and are handed a token which gains them access to another property, alleged to be operating as a brothel.

Operating an illegal brothel is a criminal offence under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Act 1995 and carries a maximum punishment of up to seven years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.

Under Scottish law, a brothel is defined as any premises with two people or more offering sexual services.

Mr Cruickshanks said he had been receiving complaints from residents for “some time” and that several properties around town were involved.

In a statement provided to STV News, he said: “If illegal brothels are operating in Arbroath, I want them shut down and those responsible brought to justice.

“Residents have raised serious concerns for some time, and they deserve to know these allegations are being properly investigated.

“I welcome the work Cllr Derek Wann has already undertaken with Police Scotland and will continue to press for action.

“The law is clear, and where criminal activity is established, it must be enforced. There can be no place for exploitation in our communities.”

Police have confirmed enquiries into illegal brothels are ongoing.

Inspector Mahboob Ahmad said: “On Monday, November 2, concerns were raised to officers regarding a small number of properties in Arbroath.

“We are looking into these concerns and speaking to the reporter to establish further information on this matter.”
