A major investigation has been launched after a woman was raped in a wooded area in Fife.

The attack took place between 2am and 5am in the early hours of Sunday morning near to Abbots Mill in Kirkcaldy.

The woman did not require hospital treatment following the incident.

It is understood work is under way to establish a description of the suspect.

Detective Inspector Samantha Davidson said: “This was a terrible ordeal for the woman, and we are doing everything we can to trace the man responsible.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing and I would ask anyone who was in the area in the early hours of Sunday morning who may have seen something suspicious to get in touch with us.”

Chief Inspector Michael Booker said: “I understand an incident such as this is concerning for the local community, and we have a dedicated enquiry team working on this investigation.

“Anyone with concerns should speak to officers without hesitation. There will be an increased police presence in the area with officers conducting high visibility patrols, and I would urge anyone with information or concerns to approach them.”

Information can be provided to police by calling 101, quoting reference number 1046 of December 7.
