Police appeal for information after red kite caught in illegal trap

Detectives have appealed for information after a red kite was caught in an illegal trap in Aberdeenshire this year.

Police Scotland officers said the bird of prey was caught in an illegally set, Duke coil spring trap in May 2026 in the Strathdon area.

The trap set is not approved for use in Scotland.

Red kites are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, making it illegal to kill, injure, or take them, or to damage their nests, eggs or young.

Extensive inquiries have been carried out, and officers are appealing to the public for information.

“Trapping a bird or animal is not only cruel, but it can also harm other wildlife and members of the public,” Police Constable Ann Ashman said.

“Inquiries are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone with information on the incident, or the use of this particular Duke coil spring trap in the area, to contact us.”
