A police officer who attended the fatal Stonehaven train derailment has been recommended for an award for his bravery.

Liam Mercer was one of the first officers on the scene when the train crashed in Aberdeenshire on August 12.

A report which was published on Thursday found the train derailed after striking “a pile of washed-out rock and gravel”.
