More than 1,000 drivers have been caught speeding in just three months by new fixed cameras in Dundee.
The decision to install permanent cameras on the city’s Kingsway was made following a survey that found over half of vehicles were exceeding the 40mph speed limit.
In addition, speeds of over 80mph were recorded regularly, prompting action by Police Scotland, the Scottish Safety Camera Programme and Transport Scotland.
In the 12 weeks since the two fixed Vector SR cameras became operational, 1,094 speeding offences were recorded, including 905 cars, 117 light goods vehicles and eight motorcycles.
In addition, nearly one-third of offences were for drivers travelling over 60mph, and 17 drivers were caught exceeding 80mph.
The speed cameras are positioned close to the Kingsway Retail Park and just a few hundred feet from the busy Strathmartine Roundabout.
Eric Dunion, area manager of the North Safety Camera Unit said he was “shocked” by the figures.
He said: “Whilst we had anticipated that the introduction of the fixed cameras would lead to an increase in the number of detections I am shocked at the level of offenders and the speeds that have been captured by these cameras on the Kingsway.
“It is frustrating that there is a high level of non-compliance amongst local drivers who should be aware of the speed limits in place.
“As these two cameras are the first in the area we have been actively engaging with those in the Tayside area through the use of online streaming, local radio adverts and currently a digital board at the start of the Kingsway.
“I would like to remind all motorists that our aim is not to catch motorists out, but to slow them down, to adhere the speed limits in place and in turn make our roads safer for all road users.”
