A golf course in Aberdeen has had its greens torn up by dirt bikes for the second time in two weeks.

Staff arrived at Nigg Bay Golf Club on Tuesday morning to find the green at several holes appeared to have been carved up by the wheels of bikes, with the grass damaged so badly that it “becomes very hard to repair”.

Greenkeepers say they now face a huge challenge to repair the ground in time for the new golfing season.

A statement from the golf club said that the damage had occurred for the second time within two weeks.

A spokesperson said: “Once again, the ground staff at Nigg bay golf club turn up for work this morning to more damage sustained to the golf course last night.

“This is the second time in the last fortnight that this has occurred and with the ground being so soft it becomes very hard to repair for the coming season.

“There are plenty green spaces around Torry for people to have fun with bikes and scooters etc without causing this kind of damage to a well maintained golf course.

“For anyone involved reading this, please have your fun elsewhere. For anyone who knows who has done this, please let us know at Niggbay@hotmail.co.uk so we can pass this on to the relevant party.”

Scottish Conservative North East MSP Liam Kerr slammed the vandalism, calling it “despicable”.

The golf club has slammed the vandalism.

He said: “I’m disgusted at the vandalism to Nigg Bay Golf Club which has caused a huge amount of upset and anguish.

“It’s despicable that mindless individuals would have the audacity to do this to such a beautiful golf course.

“This is yet another example of these bikes being used irresponsibly to wreak havoc on areas across Aberdeen and it’s about time they were cracked down on

“The staff and members at Nigg Bay take a lot of pride in the maintenance of the course, which forms a vital part of the Torry community.

“Repairing the damage will cost substantial sums of money and will take up a lot of time, just months before the full golf season starts.

“I hope those responsible for this terrible act are caught and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch with the police immediately.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
