A mum was left distressed after a doctor attempted the “painful” manual removal of her placenta after giving birth.
A complaint was lodged against NHS Tayside following the mother’s labour and post-birth care experience.
She said she had been left for too long without assessment and medical review.
The patient also complained about the actions of a specific doctor, who attempted manual removal of their placenta post birth.
She described the experience as “painful” and complained that their birth plan had not been followed, making the experience distressing and difficult for the patient and their partner.
The Scottish Public Service Ombudsman (SPSO) launched an investigation into the complaint and partly upheld it.
After consulting with an obstetrics adviser, SPSO found that the health board had acted to address the identified failings.
The watchdog said although the patient’s experience was distressing, there was no evidence that their baby was put at risk at any point.
It said they upheld some of the mum’s complaints, but made no further recommendations due to the appropriate actions already taken by the board.
NHS Tayside has been contacted for comment.
