Motorised bicycles from 'wartime era' set to go under the hammer

A Perth man’s collection of motorised bicycles is set to be auctioned off this weekend, following his death.

Brian Guild, who died last year aged 79, gathered his collection over the course of six years and worked to restore them from his garage.

The bikes are an early take on today’s e-bike and were sought after in their heyday.

More than 30 have rolled into Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club near Glamis, some dating back to the 1930s.

Auctioneer Allan Burt said: “The range goes from 1938 through to approximately 1959; autocycles and cyclemotors.

“The cyclemotor being the attachment that you could fit to an ordinary bicycle and the autocycles being a complete machine.”

Mandy McDougall is the daughter of antiques dealer, Brian Guild, who passed away last year.

Mandy said: “I think when he was quite a bit younger, he just did up normal bicycles, he started doing that and just got into more vintage stuff.

“We would say, ‘Dad, what are we going to do with all of this?’

“I mean we could have kept one or two of them but there’s no way.

“We just looked at it from the fact that, that was his hobby.”

Allan Burt, from Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club, added: “We were astonished first of all that such a big and large collection could be in one man’s hands.

“’A, the size of the collection, and B, the locale; something like that stored in a small shed in the middle of Perth.”

It is expected the bikes could fetch between £300 and £500 when they go to auction on Saturday.
