A man has been charged in connection with alleged threatening comments made towards an SNP candidate in Aberdeenshire.

The incident involving Aberdeenshire West SNP Fergus Mutch is said to have taken place outside a property in Aboyne.

Police said on Friday they have arrested and charged a 66-year-old man.

Mutch is hoping to unseat the Conservatives in the constituency when voters go to the polls next month.

Tory Alexander Burnett represented the area during the last term of the Scottish Parliament and is running for re-election.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 66-year-old man has been charged in connection with threatening comments made towards a man in the Aboyne area on Friday, 2 April.

“A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
