Man arrested and charged after protesters 'doxx' sex offenders in Aberdeen demonstrations

A man has been charged after protestors ‘doxxed’ registered sex offenders at demonstrations in Aberdeen.

Officers were alerted after crowds gathered outside four properties in the Torry, Sheddocksley and Mastrick areas of the city on Wednesday evening.

STV News understands the protests were organised by Unite the Clans, formerly known as Aberdeen Against Illegal Migration.

The group gathered at properties in a bid to ‘out’ registered sex offenders.

Police attended each demonstration and a 44-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with breach of the peace.

He is due to appear in court on Friday, July 24.

Following the arrest, police blasted protesters for “outing” registered sex offenders, adding that demonstrations “undermine” measures already in place to protect the public.

Superintendent Jason Carrigan said: “We are aware of the protests relating to groups gathering at properties and the concerns they can cause within the close communities of the city.

“Our role is to protect the public, respond appropriately to any incidents that may arise and minimise disruption.

“Recent protests have focused on registered sex offenders and people perceived to be sex offenders.

“‘Outing’ registered sex offenders on social media or physically confronting them significantly affects the ability of police and partners to manage risk effectively. It also undermines the measures already in place to protect the public.

“It also requires additional policing resources, reducing our ability to respond quickly and effectively to other calls for assistance from local communities.”

While Supt Carrigan says that most protests are peaceful, officers will not tolerate violence against officers, the public, property, or vehicles.

He added: “Any offending identified will be dealt with robustly and those responsible will be traced and arrested.

“Policing in Scotland has strong relationships with the public and we are grateful for the ongoing support of our communities.”
