Police received a report of a serious sexual assault in the Bridge Street area on June 6.
Posts on social media suggested the incident involved illegal migrants. Police Scotland said these were inaccurate.
Officers have arrested and charged a 23-year-old white British man in connection. He is due to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Saturday, June 6, 2026, we received a report of a serious sexual assault in the Bridge Street area of Arbroath.
“A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection and is due to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court at a later date.
“We are aware of online posts suggesting this incident involved illegal migrants – this is inaccurate.
“We have not received any reports of further incidents.
“There is no ongoing risk to the public and officers are actively engaging with the local community to provide reassurance.”
