A lorry driver “thought he was going to die” before crashing into a caravan that had become detached from a car in Perth and Kinross.

Emergency services were called to the A91 near Mawcarse, near the slip road onto the M90, around 11.40am on Wednesday morning following the collision.

John Campbell said he had just come off a junction when he saw a caravan that had become unhitched from a car ahead of him.

“I was driving about 16mph as I’d just come off a junction, and the caravan dislodged from a car that was going at speed,” Mr Campbell told STV News.

“I just closed my eyes and hoped for the best, I really didn’t think I was going make it through the crash. I thought I was going to die.”

The lorry driver explained that part of the caravan came through his window during the collision.

After the impact, he was able to get himself out the passenger side door before the driver of the car came over to check on him.

“I was shaking like a leaf, I couldn’t talk because I was in such shock,” Mr Campbell said.

“The police couldn’t believe that I was the driver of the lorry after looking at the crash, it was really serious.”

Mr Campbell said he didn’t need an ambulance on the day but woke up on Thursday and could barely move his back or wrist.

“I took myself to hospital this morning, and I’ve got splint on my wrist for two weeks and have been signed off work for the foreseeable until I’m better,” he added.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.40am on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, police received a report of a two-vehicle crash on the A91 near Mawcarse.

“Recovery was arranged.”
