Investigation begins after pilot killed in plane crash

A 50-year-old man was declared dead at the scene of the crash in Fife.

An air accident investigation has begun after a plane crashed into a hillside killing the pilot on Monday morning.

The alarm was raised after the light aircraft “nosedived” near Fife airport in Kinglassie at around 11.38am on Monday.

Police and ambulance arrived in the area alongside a Coastguard rescue helicopter.

The 50-year-old male pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it was deploying a team of inspectors to visit the crash site and begin inquiries.

Emergency services remain on the scene.

A spokesperson for the AAIB said: “The AAIB has been notified of this accident and is deploying a team of inspectors to commence an investigation.”

A police spokesperson said: “We received a report of a light aircraft having crashed near Fife Airport, Kinglassie, around 11.40am on Monday, December 23, 2024.

“Officers attended and a 50-year-old man, the pilot, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware.

“No-one else was injured.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.38am on Monday, December 23, to an incident involving a light aircraft near Kinglassie, Fife.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances and a heavy rescue unit to the scene to assist emergency services partners.

“Crews remain in attendance.”
