Hundreds of Voi e-bikes to be delivered to Aberdeen next week after launches in Glasgow and EdinburghSTV News

Hundreds of pay-as-you-go electric bikes will begin arriving in Aberdeen next week, following successful launches in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The initial roll out of 350 coral coloured bikes are being provided by Swedish-firm Voi, which was selected for the cycle hire scheme in Edinburgh and took over from Nextbike in Glasgow last year.

Two models will be available for riders – the Explorer 4, which has a larger metal basket and softer saddle, and the Explorer Light 1, which is lighter than standard e-bike models and designed for accessibility.

Cyclists will be able to hire a bike on a pay-as-you-go basis via a smartphone app.

Parking bays are being painted around the city in preparation for the rollout.

Aberdeen City Council are encouraging locals to use the e-bikes to travel into and around the city.

The council’s chief officer of strategic place planning David Dunne said: “The new e-bikes will be another option for people to use to travel around Aberdeen and painting pavements to create parking bays in some areas is another step to their arrival.

“We look forward to the new e-bike scheme starting around the city very soon.

“This scheme will give local residents and visitors the opportunity to travel around the city without adding to their carbon footprint and will ensure Aberdeen is a cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit now and in the future.”

Harry Foskin, senior public policy manager at Voi, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be bringing Voi e-bikes to Aberdeen, starting this month. This is about giving people a more sustainable, flexible and affordable way to move – whether it’s your daily commute, a trip to the shops or a leisurely trip around town.

“We’ve seen how quickly people fall in love with our e-bikes in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and we can’t wait to see Aberdonians hopping on the saddle and making the most of their city on two wheels. We look forward to working closely with Aberdeen City Council to deliver an e-bike scheme that works for the whole of the community.”
