Forty jobs lost and more at risk as Aberdeenshire premium butcher sold to firm in EnglandSTV News

An Aberdeenshire butcher has been sold to a firm in England, with around 40 jobs lost and more at risk.

Donald Russell, based in Inverurie and specialising in premium meat, announced in February that it planned to close, putting more than 100 jobs at risk.

Around 40 jobs have been lost so far.

Almost 80 roles have now been transferred to the new owners Dukeshill, but a 30-day redundancy consultation is still under way with those staff members.

Donald Russell said it had faced mounting challenges in recent years, blaming fluctuating meat prices and unpredictable energy costs.

Last year, the business closed its cold storage distribution centre in Kintore, resulting in around 70 people leaving the business.

Dukeshill confirmed Donald Russell will continue to operate as a standalone brand – and said its priority is to invest in its long-term future.
