A football fan has died after a “medical incident” minutes before kick off in a Scottish Premiership match.

The 72-year-old was treated by paramedics at St Johnstone’s McDiarmid Park in Perth for almost an hour after falling ill in the lead up to the side’s meeting with Aberdeen.

Medical staff from both clubs rushed to assist in the effort in the Crieff Road end as fellow spectators were ushered away from the area.

Kick off was delayed by around 15 minutes while emergency personnel provided treatment, however the man passed away a short time later.

Police Scotland confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

“Emergency services attended and a 72-year-old man died a short time later.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
