Firefighters are tackling a wildfire which has broken out near a gas plant in Aberdeenshire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the blaze which broke out close to St Fergus Gas Plant near Peterhead around 1pm on Friday afternoon.

Four appliances were sent to the scene in a bid to battle the flames.

“We were alerted at 1pm on Friday, 11 April, to reports of an outdoor fire in St Fergus near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire,” a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene where firefighters are currently working to extinguish a fire affecting a large area of dunes and grass measuring approximately 200 x 150 metres.”

It is the latest in a string of wildfires over the past week, as soaring temperatures across Scotland increased the risk of dry areas becoming alight.

SFRS have issued an “extreme risk” alert for wildfires across the whole of Scotland from Friday, April 11, until Saturday, April 12.

More warm weather is set to continue in the days ahead and SFRS are urging the public to exercise caution when out in rural areas.

SFRS said: “Crews remain in attendance.”
