Faulty washing machine caused lorry to burst into flames at circus in Fife

A faulty washing machine caused a lorry to burst into flames at a popular circus in Fife.

Emergency services were called to the fire at the Big Kid Circus on Pinkerton Road in Glenrothes at around 7.04pm on Thursday, July 3.

Black smoke could be seen behind a circus tent at the event, as flames engulfed a lorry on the site.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines to the scene, and extinguished the fire around 8.18pm.

Fife Council confirmed the fire originated from a faulty washing machine in a box van, which was said to be “well away” from the Big Top tent.

Service manager Lisa McCann said: “It was swiftly extinguished and thankfully there were no injuries.

“Scottish Fire and Rescue has said the area is now safe and events are going on as planned.”

A spokesperson for Big Kid Circus said last week: “We are relieved that no injuries have been reported and all attendees were safe.

“Our team is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire. We are working closely with local authorities to ensure a comprehensive review.

“We appreciate your understanding and support during this time.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.04pm on Thursday, July 3, to reports of a vehicle alight on Pinkerton Road, Glenrothes.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting one lorry.

“There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at 8.18pm after ensuring the area was made safe.”
