Emergency services were called to a large wildfire in Aberdeenshire after it took hold on Wednesday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received multiple calls about the blaze in Newtonhill at around 8.35pm.

Images from the scene show flames gripping the ground and thick smoke billowing into the sky.

Two appliances were initially dispatched to the scene, however, a further two were mobilised to support the crews on site.

The wildfire is currently contained and firefighters are making good progress. A specialist wildfire unit is en route to the blaze.
