An ice rink in Elgin is to reopen, months after it was deemed no longer financially viable.
Moray Leisure Centre announced in July that the decision had been taken to close the facility permanently due to spiralling energy costs.
The move was later changed to a temporary closure until October 5.
A decision has now been taken to reopen the facility after an “unprecedented” community effort.
Alongside the leisure centre management and staff and the Board, a new operating model has been created to generate more income.
The changes include a flexible skate pass, new pricing structure and updated ice timetable.
The facility will also be moved onto a cheaper energy tariff.
Staff affected by the closure are no longer at risk of redundancy.
Commenting on the news, the Ice Rink Joint User Group said: “The last few months have been tough for everyone who relies on the rink, but this outcome shows what is possible when a community comes together.
“Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve not just reopened the rink – we hope to have safeguarded a place for future generations to discover and enjoy ice sports. We can’t wait to see the rink busy again with people of all ages enjoying skating, curling, and hockey right here in Elgin.”
“Reopening the rink is about more than just ice sports — it’s about protecting a community space and a unique part of Moray’s identity”, a spokesperson for the Moray Leisure Centre Board said.
“We are proud to have worked closely with the user groups to create a model that keeps the rink viable. We are taking the first steps towards trying to secure the future of the rink, and this depends on increased revenue from the public using the facility.
“Now we need everyone to play their part. Whether you are a first-time skater, a regular curler, or someone who just wants to try something new, we encourage you to come and use the rink. Every visit helps secure its future and keeps ice sports thriving in Moray.”
Welcoming the news, MSP Richard Lochhead said: “I am delighted the Leisure Centre board has reached agreement to reopen Moray’s ice rink – a move that will undoubtedly be warmly welcomed by local clubs and ice users.
“Since the initial plans for closure were announced, I’ve worked closely with all involved to find solutions and to support Moray Leisure Centre to move onto a cheaper energy tariff, and I hope the board and the users can continue to work together to ensure a sustainable and long-term future for the ice rink.
“The local ice groups who stepped up to be part of working group deserve huge credit for stepping up and working with the Centre to save this important community facility.”
