A Dundee teenager died while on holiday in Benidorm after a reaction to vape oil, according to loved ones.

Harry Whitton was in the popular Spanish tourist destination with his girlfriend when he passed away.

The 18-year-old’s father, Colin Whitton, took to social media to say that the teen purchased a vape oil and after using it, Harry’s throat became constricted.

He hopes his son’s sudden death will “warn everyone about the dangers of vaping”.

The dad wrote: “Harry took a reaction to something. We think it was his vape; he had recently bought a vape oil in Benidorm, and it is the only difference between what he has been using and what Karina was using.

“His throat has then constricted causing him problems breathing. He also vomited which, in his struggle to breathe, has aspirated into his lungs.

“There are still far too many unknowns about these vape oils, and no long-term studies have been done on their effects.”

The family had been organising a surprise 18th prior to Harry’s death; however, they are now raising funds to help return the teenager to Tayside and organise a funeral.

His mum Debbie Bell revealed that the family’s hearts have been left “shattered” following the “tragic event”.

“As a family we are here in Spain doing everything we can to get our boy home,” she wrote. “We are together and supporting each other.

“We want to share with you all just how loved and special our boy truly was. Everything he done, he done with his cheeky character and pure heart and soul.”

Harry worked in the hospitality suite at Dundee FC’s Dens Park and at Dundee United’s Tannadice Park, across the road. The top-flight clubs took to X to say they were “deeply saddened” by the teenager’s death.

Dundee said: “Harry was a familiar and friendly face within our hospitality lounges at Dens Park, where he was highly valued by colleagues and warmly regarded by supporters.

“Our thoughts are with Harry’s family, friends and everyone who knew him at this incredibly difficult time.”

Their rivals added: “Harry was a well-known and much-loved member of our matchday hospitality team.

“His warmth, kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on colleagues and supporters alike, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Elite Ice Hockey League side Dundee Stars also paid tribute to their “devoted fan”.

The team said: “Instead of celebrating Harry’s surprise 18th birthday, his family are facing the unimaginable task of bringing their beloved son home and arranging his funeral.

“We are asking for the support of our hockey community to help get their boy back home.”
