Dundee councillors have agreed to hold a consultation on proposals to hike taxi fares in the city by almost 5%.
The local authority’s licensing committee met on Thursday to discuss an annual review of taxi hire charges.
During the meeting, they agreed that the proposed increase will be advertised for a month-long period to allow members of the public the chance to lodge any objections.
If any objections are raised, these will be brought back to the committee for further discussion.
However, if approved, the new pricing structure will come into force on April 1.
Dundee taxi fares last increased in December 2024 after councillors agreed a 13% rise three months before.
What are the proposed new charges?
- Tariff 1 (daytime) £4.20 increasing to £4.40 and each additional 1/10th of a mile to increase from 22p to 23p.
- Tariff 2 (weekday evenings) £4.62 increasing to £4.84 and each additional 1/10th of a mile to increase from 24p to 25p.
- Tariff 3 (weekend evenings) £5.04 increasing to £5.28 and each additional 1/10th of a mile to increase from 26p to 27p.
- Tariff 4 (festive period) £5.88 increasing to £6.16 and each additional 1/10th of a mile to increase from 31p to 32p.
However, writing to the licensing board, the director of ‘eTaxi’ suggested aligning Dundee’s fares with the charges in Angus.
This, he said, will ensure customers continue to receive a fair and consistent service and provide a more balanced and practical structure for drivers.
He added that the move would create greater uniformity for both customers and drivers who frequently travel between the two council areas
