An investigation is under way after a Dundee man went missing while on a cruise in Europe.

Police believe Liam Jones went overboard from the vessel which was en route to Hamburg in French waters.

The MSC Euribia embarked on its seven-night cruise from Southampton Friday, March 15.

The next day, Saturday, March 16, a passenger was reported to have gone overboard – according to cruise company MSC Cruises.

A spokesperson said the ship was en route to Hamburg in Germany at the time of the incident.

Mr Jones, from Dundee, was on the cruise with some of his family at the time and is feared to have gone overboard, STV News understands.

MSC Cruises said the incident was reported to the authorities.

“It is believed the passenger went overboard in French waters. We continue to liaise with authorities in France and are assisting them with their investigation.”

The ship returned to the UK on Friday, arriving in Southampton from France, after it appeared to have completed its cruise.

Hampshire Police boarded the vessel and officers are investigating on behalf of the coroner.

The force said Mr Jones’ family was aware.

Detective sergeant Gary Stamp said: “It is believed the passenger went overboard in French waters.

“We continue to liaise with authorities in France and are assisting them with their investigation.”

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said: “A passenger on board MSC Euribia went overboard on March 16 as the ship was sailing to Hamburg.

“This was reported to the authorities. The police in Southampton boarded the vessel today and investigated on behalf of the coroner.

“We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.

“Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will refrain from disclosing any additional information.”

The UK Foreign Office said it was supporting the family of a British national.
