Dundee City Council has apologised to a tenant who has suffered months of water damage from an unrepaired roof due to a “backlog” of repairs.
Billy Keir says he has experienced leaks and water damage to his living room ceiling, which he claims has been caused by a dislodged tile on the roof of his flat block.
Mr Keir says that the roof tile dislodged back in October last year and he raised concerns with the council regarding the issue multiple times.
The 51-year-old has lived in an upper flat on St Kilda Road for 22 years and worries the damage will get worse before it is repaired.
Speaking to The Courier, Mr Keir said: “The title on the roof has been dislodged from October last year.
“We had a few storms, there has been a lot of rain, and it’s come through the roof and soaked down the rafters. Now it’s down the plasterboard and you can see dirty water coming down the wall.
“The plasterboard on the roof is going to have to be replaced because it will be sodden.
“This could have been avoided six months ago, and I’ve phoned them ten to 15 times about it, and they still haven’t done anything.”
He added: “It will get worse the more they leave it. I mean, a simple tile fix could have prevented all the work.
“I just want the repairs done.
“I’ve been here 22 years, and this close has never been repainted, the windows have never been replaced, the back garden has just got worse and I’ve been getting all these empty promises.
“The council aren’t doing their job, it’d just not be good enough.”
Complaint upheld by council
Mr Keir lodged a complaint with the local authority, which was subsequently upheld.
The authority said that there is “regretfully a backlog of jobs” and the repair “will be completed as soon as possible.”
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “We are discussing the situation directly with the tenant.”
