Drivers visiting a Perthshire beauty spot have been warned they are putting “lives at risk” by parking on the verge of the A9.
Vehicles were pictured lining the route in Dunkeld on Sunday while the car park at The Hermitage was at capacity.
Traffic Scotland urged drivers to make alternative parking plans, adding: “Parking or stopping on the verge of the A9 is not safe – please find other options.”
The National Trust for Scotland (NTS), which oversees the site, has encouraged visitors to use public transport where possible or park responsibly if driving to The Hermitage.
STV NewsIn a notice to visitors, The Hermitage and Dunkeld NTS said: “When our ‘car park full’ signs are displayed, they mean exactly that – our car park is full, and we cannot accommodate any more vehicles.
“Please drive on and return outside peak times, ideally before 10am or after 4pm, when spaces may be available.
“Please remember that the A9 is a major trunk road, with traffic travelling at speeds of up to 60mph.
“Stopping, parking or attempting to cross the road in unsafe places puts lives at risk. No photograph or viewpoint is worth that risk.”
Visitor numbers, combined with a road closure on the A9 at the Rotmell junction, are also said to be creating a “bottleneck effect” within the village of Dunkeld.
Kerry Lindsay, of Dunkeld and Birnam Community Council, told STV News some elderly residents have faced difficulty parking when attending medical appointments or collecting prescriptions.
She added: “It’s got amazing shops, cafes, bars, and we want them to thrive.
“However, we have to weigh that up with the impact it’s having on locals and look at where public transport can play a key part of that because no new car park is going to come overnight, although one is desperately needed.”
Perth and Kinross Council has been contacted for comment.
