A driver is to stand trial charged with killing a pensioner crossing the road.

Taaneer Niazi allegedly hit Thomas Pates in Aberdeen on March 6, 2024.

It is said the 21-year-old was going at excessive speed and failed to react to the 68-year-old ahead of him.

Prosecutors claim Niazi struck Mr Pates in the city’s Seafield Road leaving him so severely hurt that he passed away in hospital on March 25, 2024.

The case called for a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow.

Louis Bendle, defending, said: “He pleads not guilty to the charge on the indictment.

“We are in a position to fix a trial.”

Judge Douglas Brown went on to set a date and the case is scheduled to begin in August 2027 in Aberdeen.

Niazi – marked as living in the city – remains on bail.
