An exhibition celebrating one of Britain’s most influential fashion designers is opening in Aberdeen.

Dame Zandra Rhodes has created eye-catching outfits for the likes of Freddie Mercury, Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana.

Ahead of ’50 Years of Fabulous’ beginning on Saturday, the 81-year said she was delighted Aberdeen Art Gallery was hosting the biggest ever exhibition dedicated to her work.

Iconic dresses and gowns from every year of her career are on display, including a replica of a famous cape worn by Queen frontman Mercury.

“It’s wonderful, he’s always remembered in that one and it always gets sent to me for autographs,” Dame Zandra said.

“In some ways, it says to me that I’ve been very lucky these things have caught on in the mind.”

This famous outfit was designed for Freddy Mercury.

It’s the first time the collection has ever gone on display outside London.

Dame Zandra said: “I feel that it beautifully represents my love of textiles and constant creativity.

“There’s a wonderful range of garments and fabrics on display, and I’m also excited to share some of my drawings and sketchbooks.

“I still draw every single day and I hope that visitors to the exhibition will get an insight into my creative process and what inspires me.”

Aberdeen Council is expecting the exhibition, which runs until March, to prove popular.

Culture spokeswoman Marie Boulton said: “This really is an unmissable opportunity for visitors to explore Dame Zandra’s design skill and personal brand throughout a vast and remarkably successful career.

“We are thrilled that the exhibition is being seen outside of London for the first time here at Aberdeen Art Gallery.”
