Demolition works at the iconic Aberdeen beach leisure centre have begun, with the building due to be razed to the ground by early 2026.

The complex opened its doors in 1989 following three years of construction. The swimming pool opened four months later.

Sport Aberdeen decided to close the pool in August 2022, as a cost-saving measure, due to high energy prices.

After the council reduced Sport Aberdeen’s budget, the leisure centre and Bucksburn swimming pool were permanently closed in April 2023.

As part of a £150m city centre/beach masterplan, the building is due to be demolished by early 2026

An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson said: “Internal demolition works are now underway.

“Once those are complete, demolition of the building will begin and is expected to be fully completed in early 2026.”
