Dad killed in Perth recycling centre explosion named by police Police Scotland

The man who died following an explosion and fire at a recycling plant in Perth has been named as Slawomir Szmeichel.

At around 12.45am on Thursday February 28, emergency services were called to Shore Recycling Ltd on Friarton Road.

The body of 46-year-old Mr Szmeichel, who is known as Sławek to family and friends, was found while another man, aged 41, was taken to Ninewells Hospital.

The 41-year-old man has since been discharged.

Mr Szmeichel’s family said: “We’re heartbroken with the sudden loss of our loved husband, dad, brother, son, and friend, without whom our lives will never be the same.

“Sławek will remain in our thoughts and our hearts forever.”

Detective Inspector James Callander, of Police Scotland’s major investigation team, said: “Our thoughts remain with Sławek’s family and friends at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what has happened and these enquiries are being carried out in partnership with relevant agencies.”
