City centre to be transformed into ‘winter wonderland’ for Christmas Dundee City Council

Dundee city centre is getting set to be transformed into a winter wonderland in time for Christmas.

An ice-rink, a big wheel and brand new light displays featuring characters from DC Thomson will give the city a festive feel in the run up to the big day.

Dundee City Council revealed the plans on Monday.

The revamped Christmas lights, inspired by the city’s history, will include comic book characters and pay tribute to Dundee’s maritime past.

The Winter Fest will open for six weeks on November 26 with Slessor Gardens hosting the ice-rink and the big wheel promising a view of the Tay.

Locals and visitors alike will also have the chance to shop for crafts or enjoy food and drink from the mini village of traditional wooden hut stalls.

From December 3 to the 24th, the city square will join in the fun with a 3D Dundee Christmas card for the ultimate festive selfie.

Overseen by a light up Pingoo, revellers will be able to cast their festive wishes at the Wishing Fountains and enjoy nightly projections illuminating City Chambers.

Depute convener of city development Steven Rome said: “With so much going on across the city centre, Dundee is the place to be this Christmas.

“Whether you’re bringing the kids out to see the lights and get a selfie with Pingoo, or enjoying food and drinks at the Winter Fest, there’s something for all ages.

“A lot of planning has gone into making it a Christmas to remember after the challenges of the last year-and-a-half, and also ensuring that the festivities are delivered safely.

“With a programme spanning six weeks, there will be plenty of time for everyone to come down and safely enjoy the fun.

“I’m sure we will see people from across the country joining local folk in discovering all Dundee has to offer during this festive period.”
